Other Trike Stuff

Cheylesmore Tricycle

Tadpole trikes are not a new idea as this example from 1882 illustrates. The Cheylesmore Tricycle was made as a safer alternative to the penny farthing bicycles of the era.

  • Two front, one rear wheels.
  • The wheels seem large but are somewhat smaller than the penny farthing bikes of the day.
  • The seat has a backrest.
  • Chain driven.
Rear wheel steering and front wheel drive are not my preferred options, but they're still found on some models of present day trikes.
Solid rubber tires are even still around marketed as puncture proof tyres.
